FUGUE & MARRONNAGE | 2024 | CG SHORT + VIDEO GAME, PS4/PS5

WRITTEN, DIRECTED AND PRODUCED BY NOAM REZGUI

FUGUE & MARRONNAGE is a transmedia project combining video game, music and digital sculptures.

Following the mysterious trail left by the fugitive slaves, the player takes on the role of a runaway and discovers the nature of his escape as she/he goes along. During his escape, she/he will be helped, advised and equipped by celestial entities who will enable her/him to face the obstacles that await the player further on. From the Vestiges of Ra to the Garden of the Wretched, you’ll have to find your way and listen carefully to excerpts from the words of thinkers and authors such Aimé Césaire, Maryse Condé, James Baldwin, Rivers Solomon, Sun Ra and others who have marked the winding paths of social and decolonial struggles.

The player takes on the role of a maroon, a term used to describe a slave who has run away from his master’s plantation. She/He is both a historical and literary figure of resistance, present in the work of Colson Whitehead, Édouard Glissant and in the works of artists and authors related with Afrofuturism. It embodies the hope of freedom, the difficulty of emancipation, and takes dangerous and mysterious paths like the underground railroad in North America. Escape appears to be an act of immense courage, and its success depends on the encounters that punctuate it.

The fugitive flees violence and submission, she/he advances towards a land that will be her/his own. She/He doesn’t know when her/his path ends, or where the boundary between free and unfree lies. This physical and psychological quest, aided and hunted, raises the question of the aftermath, which should enable her/him to emancipate her/himself from the trauma she/he has experienced.

FUGUE & MARRONNAGE will be available on Playstation 4 and Playstation 5 system on September 12, 2024.

The game will be released for free via Playstation + and Media Molecule’s Dreams catalogue.
